There is a lot of information overload in our daily lives, which can affect us either positively or negatively. Our brain can process only a limited amount of information out of the huge overload it receives. Some of the information can be simply negative noise, which negatively impacts our overall well-being.

Negative noise is any unwanted information that can dampen our spirits and lead to stress, disturbance and distraction. The source of such negative noise is mainly from negative news, negative people, social media, and often our negative thoughts. It can be from the environment that you are exposed to, like the people you interact with daily. If we want to filter out the negative noise, it is important for us to first find the source of the negative noise and then work towards filtering it out from our lives. It might not be possible to control the source but how to respond to it should be our priority.

The main sources of negative noise come from social media and news that we come across. Certain social media channels/ feeds consistently post on negative content. Also, some news channels only focus on negative news more than positive news. It is better to unfollow such channels/ accounts and follow more on content which focus on positive news which can inspire and uplift you instead of pulling you down.

Some people are filled with too much negativity and focus more on negative talks. It is better to avoid such talks and distance yourself from such people. In the case of a work environment, only if it is absolutely necessary to interact with them keep it to a bare minimum. You do not need to follow their thinking. Connect with people who help you to build yourself instead of people who cloud your judgment and fill you with self-doubts.

Pay attention to your self-talk. How you think about yourself matters. If you don’t like or love yourself, it is difficult for others too. So, understand that you are a human being and can make mistakes, learn from them. You are not a robot and have to do everything perfectly. Challenge negative thinking by building yourself positively.

Now, let us see how to filter out the negative noise from our lives:

  • Positive environment: Spend time with people who support and encourage you instead of people who pull you down. Find people who will inspire you to reach greater heights.

  • Follow your passions: Make time for activities that bring you joy like pursuing your hobbies like reading, exercising, sports, etc.

  • Consume positive news: Follow inspiring content-driven social media news. Limit your intake of negative news/ content.

  • Practice mindfulness: Daily meditation/ spirituality/ yoga can help you become more aware of being in the moment and increase mindfulness.

  • Gratitude: Always be grateful for what you have and make it a practice to think about three things for which you are grateful during the day. Having a gratitude journal is good.

  • Embrace change: Understand that change is the only constant in your life and be open to changes.

  • Realistic goals; Always set realistic goals that you can achieve instead of keeping unrealistic goals that are impossible to achieve and make you feel miserable.

  • Self-love: Always be kind to yourself and love yourself. You should be your biggest motivator and make it a priority to take care of your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

  • Build resilience: The ability to bounce back from adversity is a skill that requires your effort.

Filtering out the negative and embracing the positive is a continuous ongoing process that requires conscious effort and dedication. Always remember the ability to pull you up or down is your choice. Do not give that power to anyone else.
