“To thine own self be true.” – William Shakespeare
These powerful words by the great writer and poet of English literature, even though they seem simple enough, hold great significance. In today’s world of AI, where people are desperate enough to show a polished version of themselves to the world compared to how they truly are authenticity has become increasingly rare. Everyone is busy creating a false version to show the world instead of embracing their true self. The courage to be oneself is depreciating.
So, what does it mean to be authentic? Authenticity is a choice to be who we truly are instead of pretending who we are not. It means being the real and original version of oneself instead of faking it. It is about the courage to be truly yourself, instead of conforming to what the world would like you to be. Wearing masks can get applause temporarily but can never win peace, because at the back of your mind the win was never yours.
Recently, I came across an example that made me reflect on authenticity. In an age where AI can generate impressive content within seconds, it has become easier than ever to present ourselves as experts in subjects we barely understand. The real question is not whether we can create something, but whether it genuinely reflects who we are and what we feel passionate about. On social media, we see people every day sharing things they do not believe in, caring about things that rarely matter to them, and presenting fake friendships and love. It appears people are afraid of their true selves and worry about how the world will react if they reveal who they truly are.
The benefits of being authentic are often underappreciated by such individuals. But in truth, being authentic helps you to express your true self without any worry. If we are not always authentic, it can make you lose confidence in yourself; it can make you doubt every choice you make. Being authentic improves your mental health and helps you to build relationships based on trust and truth. So, how do we adapt a more authentic lifestyle?
Being aware of what you really want and what you are projecting out
Adapting a more carefree lifestyle built on your happiness
Not wondering in every step how people perceive you
Believing in yourself and your ideas
Always remember that you are enough. You don’t need false masks to hide; just be yourself and shine on. The people who genuinely like you will always appreciate you for being yourself. Remember that you are unique and precious. In a world of dark clouds, you can be the shining star the world needs.
